What are Cockroaches?
Cockroaches are insects belonging to the order Blattodea. They are known for their flattened bodies, long antennae, and fast-running movements. Cockroaches are commonly found in various environments worldwide, particularly in warm and humid areas. They are often considered pests due to their tendency to infest homes, buildings, and food storage areas. Cockroaches are scavengers and can feed on a wide range of organic matter, including food scraps, garbage, and even decaying matter. They are known to transmit diseases and can trigger allergies in some individuals through their feces, saliva, and shed skins.
Most Common Cockroachs in NorthEast Ohio?
German Cockroach
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a common species of cockroach found in Ohio, as well as many other parts of the world. These cockroaches are small and light brown or tan in color, with two dark parallel stripes running down their backs. They are known for their rapid reproductive rate and ability to infest homes, restaurants, and other buildings. They can pose health risks by contaminating food and surfaces with bacteria and allergens, and their presence in homes can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort for residents. (Image Sources)
American Cockroach
The American cockroach is one of the largest cockroach species in Ohio and is known for its exceptional speed, although it’s a weak flier. Originating from Africa and the Middle East, it arrived in Ohio centuries ago via ships. Active year-round in warm, moist environments, including indoors, they are common pests in commercial settings like restaurants, supermarkets, and warehouses.
Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental cockroach is commonly found in damp environments such as sewers, drains, basements, and porches indoors, while outside they prefer areas under mulch, bushes, leaf litter, and woodpiles. They feed on decaying plants, starchy scraps, and animal matter. Considered a significant household pest in Ohio, the Oriental cockroach emits a strong odor and is known for its unhygienic habits.
Brown-Banded Cockroach
Interestingly, this species of cockroach requires less moisture compared to other species. This adaptability allows them to inhabit areas in your home where other cockroaches may not venture. They are commonly found hiding in appliances and cabinets, but can also be present in various other areas such as the living room or bedroom. Due to their aversion to light, these cockroaches are typically not seen during the daytime, earning them the nickname of “little gremlins.”
Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach
The Pennsylvania wood cockroach often enters homes by hitching a ride inside firewood brought indoors. Fortunately, this species tends to avoid living with other cockroaches, reducing the risk of contamination and illness. Preferring cooler temperatures, Pennsylvania wood cockroaches struggle to survive indoors for extended periods due to the dry environment.
